In 1973, Canada marked the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, originally established as the Northwest Mounted Police in 1873. A special 25-cent coin was created to mark the event, featuring a mounted officer carrying a banner as in the RCMP Musical Ride pageant.
In order to ensure the relief of the RCMP design would strike up well, the portrait of the queen on the obverse was reduced in size and relief. All 1973 quarters were supposed to be produced with this modified portrait of the queen. However, a very small number of coins was accidently produced using an old 1972 obverse portrait die paired with the new 1973 commemorative reverse die. This mixed-die error large-bust variety has been found in both business-strike and collector issues.
The 1973 large-bust variety has been one of the most popular, sought-after and elusive coins produced by the Royal Canadian Mint in the past 50 years. In addition to the size of the effigy, the two varieties can be easily distinguished by comparing the distance of the denticles from the edge of the coin and by comparing the detail in the queen's hair.
